I spent years being told that yogurt and probiotics were the holy grail for gut health. Every doctor and health magazine says the same thing. Just eat more “good bacteria” and everything will balance out.
So, I started having Greek yogurt every morning. I even added those expensive refrigerated probiotic drinks. Instead of feeling better, I felt like a balloon about to pop.
The cramping was constant. I was more regular, sure, but the quality of life was terrible. I had brain fog and skin rashes that I never had before.
Last month, I finally cut it all out. No yogurt, no kefir, no pills. Within four days, the pressure in my abdomen just vanished.
It turns out my body might be sensitive to the histamines or maybe just the sheer volume of bacteria. I’m 58 now, and I’m realizing that “standard” health advice is often a one-size-fits-all trap. Has anyone else found that the more they tried to “fix” their gut with fermented stuff, the worse it got?

I had the exact same experience. Everyone kept pushing kombucha on me and it gave me the worst migraines of my life.

You might want to look into SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). If you have too much bacteria in the wrong place, adding more via probiotics is like throwing gasoline on a fire.

It’s the histamine! I’m 62 and found out late in life that fermented foods are high in histamines. If your bucket is already full, yogurt just overflows it.

Did you try the low-fat versions? Sometimes the dairy fat is actually the culprit for the cramping rather than the cultures themselves.
I feel seen. I spent $60 a month on those high-end capsules and felt miserable. Stopped taking them and my stomach flattened out in a week.

It’s so frustrating because you feel like you’re doing something wrong when the “healthy” stuff makes you sick.

I wonder if it’s the specific strains in the commercial yogurts. Most of them only have two or three types of bacteria. Maybe our systems need more variety or just less concentration?

I had to switch to just plain old fiber and lots of water. The fermented stuff just didn’t sit right with me after I hit 55.

The brain fog comment really hits home. I thought I was getting early dementia! Turns out it was just my gut reacting to the sauerkraut I was forcing myself to eat.

Have you tried a low-FODMAP diet? It helps identify if those sugars in dairy are the problem. My doc suggested it and it changed everything.
I think as we get older, our stomach acid decreases. If you don’t have enough acid to process all that active bacteria, it just sits there and ferments even more in your gut. That’s my theory anyway.
Glad you’re feeling better now. It’s a relief when you finally figure out what’s causing the bloat.

I still eat yogurt but only once or twice a week. Every day was definitely too much for my system.
Exactly. Listen to your own body, not the influencers or the marketing on the carton!
