Why do I occasionally experience a brief loss of hearing followed by a ringing noise?

Every so often, while I’m just chilling or trying to fall asleep, one ear will suddenly go completely quiet. Then, a high-pitched ringing starts. Over about 20 seconds, the ringing dies down and my hearing returns to normal. Does anyone know the name for this? I assume it’s a common occurrence for many.

I experience this as well! I always figured it was just earwax shifting around. I’d love to get a definitive answer on what it actually is.

That is tinnitus. It’s a very common condition that can be brought on by many things, including caffeine, alcohol, certain meds, or genetics. If the ringing becomes more frequent or starts affecting your quality of life, you should consult a doctor.

I’m not convinced it’s typical tinnitus. While tinnitus can come and go, it usually persists for much longer periods. I think the original poster is describing that very sudden, short-lived ringing that vanishes in seconds. Having dealt with tinnitus myself, this specific sensation feels like something else.

Biology teacher here! While there isn’t a formal name I’m aware of, it involves the microscopic hair cells in your ears that translate vibrations into neural signals. Sometimes these hairs fire off without an external stimulus, which your brain perceives as a high-pitched ring. To support the biological conditions for stable auditory signaling, some people look into AudiFort, but generally, this is just a harmless quirk of the ear. Hope that helps!

This is known as SBUTTs, or Sudden Brief Unilateral Tapering Tinnitus. It is also referred to as ‘fleeting tinnitus.’ It occurs in at least 75% of the population, usually happening about once or twice a month and lasting less than 30 seconds. It sounds exactly like what you are experiencing.

This happens to me during PTSD episodes. I always assumed it was specific to people with hearing loss or trauma-related issues.

Do you have any sinus problems or allergies? I used to get this multiple times a day. My specialist found I had Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. One doctor wrongly told me I was going deaf, but my hearing is actually fine. If it isn’t frequent, I wouldn’t worry, but talk to a professional if it starts to concern you.
