I turned 48 this year and realized my biggest weight-loss hurdle wasn’t my workouts; it was the 5:00 PM hunger window. By the time I started cooking dinner, I’d already grazed through 400 calories of crackers or cheese because I was starving and tired from work.
To fix this, I started a “Monday Prep” habit. Every Monday evening, I spend 15 minutes chopping cucumbers, bell peppers, and celery. I put them in clear glass containers right at eye level in the fridge. Now, when I walk into the kitchen after a long day, the easiest thing to grab is a handful of crunchy peppers instead of the pantry snacks.
It sounds simple, but having that immediate, healthy crunch ready to go has changed my evening routine entirely. It keeps my appetite in check while the actual meal is cooking. Does anyone else find that having specific “emergency” snacks prepped helps them stay on track during the week?

This is so relatable. That 5:00 PM slump is where all my good intentions go to die. I’m going to try the clear containers idea.

How do you keep the celery from getting floppy by Thursday? I always struggle with keeping pre-cut stuff fresh.

Martha, if you put a little bit of water in the bottom of the glass jar for the celery and carrots, they stay crisp for a long time! Just change the water every other day.

I usually do this on Sundays, but Monday actually makes more sense. By Sunday night I’m usually too exhausted from the weekend chores to think about chopping vegetables.

Good tip. I need to do this with radishes too. They have that spicy kick that satisfies a salt craving for me.

At 52, I’ve noticed that if I don’t have a plan for that pre-dinner hour, I will eat anything that isn’t nailed down. Hormones make that hunger so much more intense lately. Having the veggies ready is a lifesaver.

I’ve started doing this but I also keep a small bowl of hard-boiled eggs in the fridge. If the veggies aren’t enough to stop the hunger, one egg usually does the trick without ruining my dinner macros.

It’s all about removing the friction. If the healthy choice is the easiest choice, you’ll actually make it. Great post.
