After hitting forty, my metabolism definitely slowed down, and late-night snacking was undoing all my hard work. I decided to implement a strict kitchen-closing time of 7:00 PM to see if it would make a difference. It turned out to be the simplest change I ever made, and the weight finally started moving again.
First, I set a phone alarm for 6:30 PM to remind me to finish my last meal. This gives me enough time to eat without rushing. Once the clock hits seven, the kitchen is officially closed. I brush my teeth immediately after dinner, which acts as a mental signal that eating is done for the day.
Second, I replaced my usual couch snacks with herbal tea or sparkling water. Having a warm mug of peppermint tea keeps my hands busy while watching TV and helps with digestion. If I feel a genuine hunger pang, I remind myself that breakfast is only a few hours away. This habit has improved my sleep quality and stopped those mindless calories from adding up.

Brushing your teeth right after dinner is such a game changer. It makes the food taste terrible if you try to sneak a snack anyway!

I struggle so much with this because my husband loves to eat chips while we watch Netflix at 9 PM. How do you deal with the temptation when others are eating around you?

I’ve been doing this for three months now and lost 12 pounds without changing much else. It really works for us ‘older’ folks because it regulates our insulin before bed.

Try ginger tea if you feel bloated. It really helps settle the stomach during that evening window.

This is basically a form of intermittent fasting. Simple and effective.

What do you do if you’re invited out to dinner? Do you just make an exception or do you stick to the 7 PM rule strictly?

I find that if I eat enough protein during my 5 PM dinner, I don’t even think about food later. If I have a carb-heavy dinner, I’m starving by 9 PM. The quality of that last meal is key to making this work.

The ‘kitchen is closed’ mentality is huge. I literally turn off the overhead light in the kitchen and only use a small lamp in the living room to set the mood for sleep.

Love the phone alarm idea. I usually lose track of time and suddenly it’s 8:30 and I haven’t even started cooking.

I started doing this to help with my acid reflux, but the weight loss was a very welcome side effect. My doctor said giving the body 3-4 hours to digest before lying down is crucial after 50.

Hard for me as a shift worker, but I try to keep the same ‘no eating 4 hours before bed’ rule regardless of when my ‘evening’ actually is.
