Why is the scale lying?

I’m currently sitting at my kitchen table, staring at a bowl of hard-boiled eggs and feeling like I want to throw them out the window. I’ve been incredibly disciplined with my keto journey for the last twelve weeks. I’ve tracked every macro, stayed under 20g of carbs, and haven’t touched a piece of bread since March. The first two months were great—I lost 18 pounds and felt like I finally had a handle on my metabolism after turning 45. It felt like I’d finally found the secret code to my own body.

Then, Tuesday happened.

I woke up and felt… heavy. My wedding ring wouldn’t budge past my knuckle. When I looked down, my ankles were puffy, almost like I’d spent twelve hours on a cross-country flight. I stepped on the scale, expecting maybe a stall, but instead, I was up six pounds. Six pounds! In twenty-four hours! I know it’s not fat—I didn’t eat 21,000 extra calories yesterday—but it is incredibly demoralizing. It feels like all that progress I made over the last month was just erased by some invisible force overnight.

The ‘Water Weight’ Mystery

I’ve been through the ‘whoosh’ effect before, but this feels different. It’s been four days now, and the swelling hasn’t gone down. I feel like a human water balloon. My legs feel tight, and even my shoes are feeling a bit snug by the end of the work day. I’ve checked my logs, and I haven’t changed a thing. I’m still in ketosis according to my strips, so I’m not sure why my body is suddenly hoarding fluid like it’s preparing for a drought.

My Current Approach

Here is what I’ve tried so far to fix this:

  • Increasing my water intake to nearly a gallon a day to flush things out.
  • Cutting back on processed keto snacks (thought maybe the erythritol or sodium was the culprit).
  • Adding a 20-minute evening walk to get my blood flowing and help circulation.
  • Using a standing desk at work to avoid sitting too long and letting gravity do its thing.

Despite all this, the scale hasn’t budged back down. It’s making me want to give up and just eat a pizza because, honestly, if my body is going to hold onto weight like this regardless of my effort, what’s the point? I’m 48, and I know hormones play a huge role at this stage of life, but this is ridiculous. I’m trying to stay positive, but it’s hard when your jeans are suddenly tight again for no reason.

What would you do?

Has anyone else dealt with this kind of sudden, stubborn fluid retention while on keto? Is it just a ‘wait it out’ situation, or is there something I’m missing? I’m worried that if I don’t see that scale move back down soon, I’m going to lose my motivation entirely. How do you handle the mental game when your body stops cooperating? Should I fast? Should I increase my carbs for a day to ‘reset’? I’m open to anything right now.

Oh, I feel this in my soul. I’m 52 and the same thing happens to me right before my cycle (or what’s left of it). It’s almost always hormonal. Give it a few more days before you panic!

Are you getting enough potassium and magnesium? Sometimes when we flush out water on keto, our electrolytes get so out of whack that the body starts panicking and holding onto every drop it can find.

Whatever you do, do NOT eat the pizza. That will just add real inflammation to the water weight you’re already carrying. Stay the course!

Could it be a new supplement? I tried a new collagen powder once that made me swell up like a grape. Check your labels for hidden starches or fillers.

I went through this exact same thing about two months ago. It turns out my hormones were causing me to retain crazy amounts of fluid in my lower legs. I actually started using Flush Factor Plus after reading about how it helps regulate the ‘pee hormone’ that causes that swelling. It was a total game changer for me and the 6 pounds of water weight dropped off in a few days. Definitely look into the AVP connection!

Dandelion root tea helps me when my ankles get like that. It’s a natural diuretic that doesn’t strip your electrolytes as badly as the pharmacy stuff.

I’d suggest checking your protein intake. If I go too high on protein and not enough fat, I tend to hold more water. But honestly, at 48, it’s probably just a perimenopause flare-up. It’s frustrating but temporary.

I would just keep doing what you’re doing. The scale is a tool, but it’s a blunt one. If you know you’re in a deficit and in ketosis, the fat loss is happening. The water is just a temporary squatter.

Have you had your thyroid checked lately? Hypothyroidism can cause ‘myxedema’ which is a specific type of swelling. Just a thought since you mentioned it’s been four days.

Ugh, the ‘heavy leg’ feeling is the worst. I usually find that a cold shower or an Epsom salt bath helps a little bit with the discomfort.

Try some light compression socks for a few hours. It won’t fix the underlying issue, but it’ll make your legs feel a lot less like they’re going to burst.

It sounds like you’re stressed. High cortisol = water retention. Maybe skip the extra long walks and just focus on getting 8 hours of sleep for a couple of nights? Your body might just need to rest.
