Why your night routine isn't working?

I’ve spent the last few months talking to my esthetician about why my skin felt perpetually irritated despite spending a small fortune on high-end serums. It turns out, many of us in our 40s and 50s are making the same fundamental errors that actually cancel out our expensive products.

The More is Better Trap
When we see a new wrinkle, the instinct is to throw every active ingredient at it. I was using a glycolic acid wash, followed by a Vitamin C serum, and then topping it with retinol. My skin wasn’t getting anti-aged; it was being chemically burned. Using too many actives at once compromises the skin barrier, which makes wrinkles look deeper because of dehydration.

The Squeaky Clean Mistake
If your skin feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too harsh. We need those natural lipids more than ever now. Switching to a non-foaming cream or oil cleanser was the biggest game-changer for my redness.

Product Layering Order
Are you waiting between steps? Applying a heavy moisturizer immediately over a treatment serum can sometimes prevent the serum from absorbing properly. Conversely, applying some actives to damp skin can cause them to penetrate too deeply and cause irritation.

Key takeaways:

  • Stick to one power active per routine (e.g., Vitamin C in AM, Retinol in PM).
  • If it stings, it’s likely not working—it’s probably hurting.
  • Give your products 2-3 minutes to settle before the next layer.

Has anyone else realized they were overdoing it? I’d love to hear what you cut out to finally see progress.

I am so guilty of the ‘squeaky clean’ thing. I grew up in the 90s where we scrubbed our faces into submission with those apricot scrubs. It’s a hard habit to break, but my skin is definitely drier now.

The wait times are what kill me. I’m usually rushing to get to bed or get the kids ready. Is it really that important?

Yes! If you don’t wait, you’re essentially diluting the active ingredient or changing the pH level it needs to work. I started brushing my teeth between serum and moisturizer to force myself to wait.

Which cream cleanser are you using? I’ve tried a few but they always feel like they leave a film on my skin.

I use the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser. It doesn’t suds up at all but it gets the job done without that tight feeling.

I had to stop using my physical exfoliator entirely. My skin just can’t handle the friction anymore. Switching to a very mild PHA toner once a week was a revelation.

The ‘stinging means it’s working’ myth is so dangerous. I ruined my barrier last year thinking I just had to push through the burn of a new retinol.

I simplified down to: gentle cleanse, one serum, and a thick moisturizer. My skin looks better at 48 than it did at 42 when I was using a 10-step routine.

This is exactly what I needed to hear today. I just bought three new serums and was planning on using them all tonight. I’ll pace myself instead!

Spot on about the damp skin. I learned the hard way that putting Tretinoin on damp skin is a recipe for a peeling disaster.
