My insulin resistance reached a stage where my labs were borderline prediabetic, I had massive cravings for sugar and carbs, and I was so thirsty I was consuming over two gallons of water daily. I tried a strict no-carb diet for a month, including cutting out complex carbs. While the cravings improved slightly, my thirst and exhaustion didn’t budge. I finally pushed past my fear of side effects and upped my extended-release dose from 500mg to 1000mg three weeks ago, following my doctor’s advice. Now, I’m drinking about a gallon less water every day. I noticed I wasn’t refilling my large water bottle nearly as often, which was a huge sign for me. Even when I eat carbs with protein and fiber, I don’t get that extreme thirst anymore—previously, even a small serving of brown rice was too much. Plus, I haven’t experienced any of the stomach issues I was worried about. I’m just so excited and wanted to post this. Meds really do help, and there’s no reason to fear them!
That’s wonderful news! Combining metformin with inositol felt like a miracle for me as well. The difference is incredible, and I feel way better now. I really hope your story encourages others to give it a chance and helps lower the stigma of using meds for PCOS and insulin resistance.
Do people only take metformin for PCOS if they have insulin resistance? Since my blood sugar levels are normal, I’m curious if it would actually do anything for me.
So glad to hear this! I’m giving inositol a try for a few months before considering metformin, but your experience makes me feel much more optimistic that it won’t be a bad experience!
I’m about to increase my dosage from 500mg to 1000mg, and reading this makes me feel so much more hopeful!
I’ve been using ‘metformy’ for a month now and it has honestly changed my life! Even on the minimum dose, I’m loving the results. I also use inositol every day. The metformin made me really exhausted at first, but adding B12 twice a day with my food fixed that completely.
