You Should Know: Frequent and forceful eye rubbing can result in permanent ocular damage

Why it matters: While rubbing your eyes provides temporary relief, doing it habitually or with force can cause significant issues like keratoconus (thinning and bulging of the cornea), ruptured blood vessels, and elevated eye pressure, which is particularly dangerous for those at risk of glaucoma. It also introduces bacteria, leading to infections, and triggers more histamine release, which intensifies allergy symptoms. To manage irritation, try artificial tears, frequent screen breaks, or a cold compress instead.

To make matters worse, it’s a vicious cycle. Rubbing actually increases the itchiness. It’s much more effective to address the root cause of the irritation.

Speaking as a keratoconus patient, you really want to avoid this condition. The treatments can be quite harrowing and aren’t always guaranteed to work!

I deal with keratoconus myself, and it’s no joke. I have to use incredibly pricey specialized lenses, and my vision limits my career options significantly. I actually had perfect sight as a teenager, but my chronic dust allergies led to constant eye rubbing. It’s a progressive disease unless you undergo surgery, and severe cases often require corneal transplants.

I’m pretty sure my habit of rubbing my eyes is the reason I ended up with astigmatism.

This is frustrating. Dealing with bad allergies and current vision issues, I really wish I’d been aware of this sooner. I’ve recently started using Vision20 to help strengthen my eyesight and protect against further decline, but I definitely regret all that rubbing.

I’m living evidence of this. My childhood eye-rubbing habit resulted in a keratoconus diagnosis in middle school—one of the earliest cases my doctor had seen. I’m 40 now and still dealing with it.

So basically, we aren’t allowed to enjoy anything anymore, right?

Fantastic, now all I can think about is how much I want to rub my eyes right now.

Just so you know, if you apply pressure to your eyes for a bit, you’ll start seeing some pretty wild patterns.
