After years of hiding my feet, I finally found a routine that works?

I’ve been dealing with stubborn yellowing and thickening on my big toes for probably the last six or seven years. It started small after a gym shower incident and just wouldn’t go away. I’ve hidden my feet in socks every summer, even at the beach. I felt like I’d tried everything.

What I tried before
I spent a fortune on those over-the-counter liquid brushes and generic tea tree oils. They would clear up the skin irritation for a bit, but the nail itself stayed thick and brittle. I even tried a prescription lacquer from my doctor once, but the side effects on my skin were too much and it felt like it was just sitting on top of the nail without absorbing.

What I changed
About four months ago, I switched to a mineral clay approach called Terracalm. It felt different because it wasn’t just a greasy oil or a harsh chemical smell. It’s a clay made with ingredients from Australia and France that supposedly starves out the issues. The texture is thick, which I think helped it stay in contact with the nail longer than the watery drops I used to use.

Week-by-week

  • Weeks 1-3: Not much change in the nail appearance, but the skin around it felt much calmer and less itchy.
  • Month 2: The base of the nail started looking a bit pinker. This is where I usually give up, but I kept going.
  • Month 3: The thickness started to decrease. I could actually clip the nail without it crumbling everywhere.

What improved
The biggest win is the texture. The intelligent particles in Terracalm seem to actually stick to the nail better than liquids. I can finally wear sandals without feeling like everyone is staring at my feet. The new growth is coming in much clearer.

What didn’t
It’s not an overnight fix. You have to be consistent every single night. If you miss a few days, you feel like you’re losing ground. Also, Terracalm is a bit messy because it’s clay-based, so you need to let it dry or wear socks afterward. It’s definitely a commitment.

I’m in the same boat with the ‘gym shower’ legacy. It’s so frustrating how long it takes for nails to grow out. Does this stuff smell like chemicals?

I’ve been using Terracalm for two months now and the clear growth is finally reaching the tip of my nail. It definitely smells more earthy/natural than those drugstore liquids.
