Can I fix my barrier after 45?

I turned 46 last year and suddenly my skin felt like parchment. No matter how much cream I slathered on, it just sat there while the skin underneath felt brittle. I was stuck in this cycle of trying stronger actives to fix things, but it only made the stinging worse. Here is what I finally figured out through trial and error.

Why was my skin reacting to everything?
I realized I had completely nuked my moisture barrier. I was using a high-strength retinol and an AHA liquid almost every night. My skin wasn’t aging faster; it was just incredibly inflamed and couldn’t hold onto water anymore.

What actually changed the texture?
I stopped all actives for three weeks. I went back to a basic glycerin-based cleanser and a thick balm with ceramides. Once the stinging stopped, I introduced a facial oil over my moisturizer at night to seal everything in.

Does the ‘slugging’ trend work for us?
For me, it was the game changer. Putting a tiny bit of petroleum-based ointment over my dry patches before bed finally stopped the morning tightness. My fine lines actually look softer now because the skin is actually hydrated, not just coated in wax. It’s a relief to realize I didn’t need more expensive serums, just more protection.

I needed to hear this today. I’ve been scrubbing my face raw thinking it was just ‘dead skin’ making me look dull, but I think I’m just irritated.

Which facial oil did you settle on? I find most of them just break me out even at 50, so I’m a bit nervous to try.

The same thing happened to me when I hit menopause. Everything I used for 20 years suddenly started burning. It’s like my skin thickness just vanished overnight. Going back to basics with a creamy cleanser was the only thing that saved me.

Slugging is great but be careful if you are prone to milia around the eyes! I learned that the hard way after a week of using heavy balms.

I did the same thing with the ‘more is better’ approach to retinol. My face looked like a red pepper for a month before I realized I was overdoing it.

Ceramides are the secret weapon for our age group, honestly. They make such a difference in the bounce of the skin.

Did you find that your skin got oily again after fixing the barrier, or did it stay on the drier side? I’m curious if the ‘parchment’ feeling is permanent now.

I’m curious about the cleanser. I’ve been using a foaming one forever because I like the ‘squeaky clean’ feeling, but I think it might be too harsh for me now that I’m 48.

This is so helpful, thank you for sharing your experience. It’s easy to get sucked into the marketing of ‘stronger is better’.

I think the marketing for these high-strength acids is really geared toward younger skin with faster turnover. We just can’t bounce back as quickly from that kind of daily chemical exfoliation. I only use an AHA once a week now and my skin looks much better.

I tried the ointment over moisturizer trick and woke up with the softest skin I’ve had in years. It feels counter-intuitive to put grease on your face but it works.

It’s such a breakthrough when you realize your skin isn’t failing, it’s just thirsty and tired of being attacked. Glad you found a routine that works!
