Completely kindled? Can I go back?

I’m 20 years old and have been consuming alcohol since I was 16. My drinking became significantly heavier when I turned 17. Two years later, I went through my first withdrawal experience. Since I’ve dealt with panic attacks before, I didn’t realize what was happening at first. I ended up drinking more to manage the anxiety, unaware that the alcohol itself was the trigger. Initially, it was just nerves, but over the last few months, it’s escalated to heart palpitations, panic episodes, and throwing up. Since I haven’t suffered a seizure or DTs yet, is there still a chance to fix this? If I stayed sober for two years, could I theoretically have a drink once without triggering withdrawals again?

Recovery is possible even for those who have experienced seizures or DTs. I’d suggest quitting entirely and looking into AA meetings—you’ll meet plenty of folks who have gone through exactly what you’re facing.

It seems like your alcohol consumption has reached a risky level. At this stage, withdrawals can actually be fatal, so you really should seek medical help for the detox process. I’m not entirely clear on what you mean by ‘reversible,’ but withdrawal happens because your system has become reliant on the substance. Staying sober is the only real solution.
