Hi everyone, I’m reaching out because I’ve noticed that as I’ve gotten into my late 60s, my stomach just doesn’t bounce back like it used to. After a big Sunday dinner, I’d feel sluggish for days. I decided to try a little experiment this past week: having a small cup of warm bone broth about 30 minutes before my main meal. I’d heard it helps “prime” the system, and I wanted to see if it actually made a difference for someone my age.
I’ve been doing this for seven days now, and I’m curious if anyone else has tried this or something similar? For me, the bloating after dinner seems much less intense. I’m not sure if it’s the collagen or just the warmth, but it feels like things are moving through much more smoothly. I’m using a simple chicken bone broth I make in the slow cooker, but I’ve tried the store-bought cartons in a pinch too.
I’d love to do a quick survey here. Have you noticed any benefits from adding bone broth to your routine? Or is there another “starter” you use before meals to help things along? I’m trying to figure out if this is a keeper or just a placebo effect. Let’s share what’s working for our gut health as we navigate these golden years together! It would be great to hear if you have a specific time of day that works best for you or if you add any specific herbs to the mix.

I’ve been doing this for a few months now! I find that a little bit of sea salt and cracked pepper in the broth makes it feel more like a treat than a chore. It definitely helps my regularity.
I tried it but the sodium in the store-bought stuff was a bit much for my blood pressure. If you make it yourself, it’s probably much better. I stick to warm lemon water mostly.
Gerry, I noticed the same thing once I hit 65. The broth definitely helps with that ‘heavy’ feeling. I usually add a slice of fresh ginger to mine while it’s heating up. It really settles the stomach before a meal.

Does it have to be bone broth? Would a standard vegetable bouillon work as well, or is it specifically the collagen that helps?
I used to do the broth ritual every morning, but it got to be a bit much with the prep work. I actually switched over to using Finnesa lately to keep my liver and gut health in check, and I’ve been really satisfied with how much smoother my digestion feels throughout the day.
Jim, from what I’ve read, the gelatin and amino acids in bone broth are what really help the gut lining. Veggie broth is nice, but it lacks those specific building blocks.
I’m definitely going to try this. I’ve been struggling with bloating after lunch for years. Thanks for the tip, Gerry!
I drink a cup every night before bed actually. It seems to help me wake up feeling less ‘stuck’ if that makes sense. Plus, it’s very soothing and helps me sleep better than tea does.
Just make sure you’re getting enough fiber too! Broth is great but don’t forget the roughage.
Great experiment! It’s amazing how these small changes can make such a big difference as we get older. Keep us updated on how you feel after a full month!
