I have been reading quite a bit lately about the benefits of adding fermented foods like sauerkraut or kefir to a morning routine. Some people swear it kickstarts their system better than any supplement, while others find the acidity a bit too much for an empty stomach.
Could the live cultures be more effective when the digestive tract is relatively clear? Or is it simply the added hydration and salt content that helps move things along?
I would love to know what specific foods you have tried and if the timing actually matters for your comfort levels.

I’ve tried a spoonful of kimchi with my eggs. It definitely wakes up the palate, but I haven’t noticed a huge change in regularity yet. Maybe I need to give it more than a week.

I tried the sauerkraut thing for a month but the salt was a bit much for my blood pressure. I eventually switched to a supplement called Finnesa to help with my gut balance and liver health instead. It’s been much easier on my stomach in the mornings and I still get that smooth digestion I was looking for.

Kefir is my go-to. I find that if I drink it right when I wake up, I feel much less bloated by lunchtime. If I wait until the afternoon, it doesn’t seem to have the same effect.

Does it have to be the refrigerated kind? I bought some sauerkraut from the pantry aisle and someone told me it’s basically dead because it was pasteurized.

Yes, it must be the ‘live’ stuff from the fridge section. Look for ‘raw’ or ‘unpasteurized’ on the label. Otherwise, you’re just eating salty cabbage.

I’ve been doing a half cup of Greek yogurt with a bit of honey. Not sure if that counts as ‘fermented’ enough for what you’re asking, but it keeps things moving.

I find the acidity is too much for my reflux if I do it first thing. I have to eat a piece of toast first, then the fermented stuff.

Interesting survey. I’ve noticed that consistency is more important than timing. If I skip my kombucha for two days, I can really feel the difference in my gut comfort.

I can’t stand the smell of sauerkraut in the morning! I wish I could do it, but my nose says no way at 7 AM.

Miso soup is a great alternative if you want something warm. It’s fermented and very gentle on the stomach. I started having a small bowl for breakfast and it’s been a game changer for my bloating.

Gerry, are you making your own or buying it? I’ve heard the homemade versions have a much wider variety of bacterial strains.

I tried making my own once. It exploded in the pantry. Now I just buy the expensive stuff from the health food store. Safety first!

I’m with the ‘empty stomach’ crowd. I think the probiotics survive the stomach acid better if there isn’t a whole meal sitting there. Just my two cents.

I’ve been doing this for years. A small glass of beet kvass every morning. It’s an acquired taste, but my liver and digestion have never felt better.

Does anyone find it makes them more gassy? I tried it for three days and had to stop because it was quite uncomfortable.

Nellie, that’s usually just the ‘die-off’ effect or your microbiome adjusting. If you start with just a teaspoon and work your way up, the gas usually subsides after a week.
