I’ve been reflecting on my recent experience with HSV-2 and noticed a curious pattern. Over the last year, I’ve had three outbreaks, and each one followed a period of significantly disrupted sleep. It makes me wonder if focusing on a strict bedtime routine might be more effective than the various supplements I’ve been trying.
Is it possible that deep sleep is the primary driver for keeping the virus dormant, or is it just that sleep deprivation acts as a general stressor? I’ve seen some people mention that blue light exposure or late-night screen time might play a role in their nervous system health, which then impacts their immune response.
I’m curious to know if anyone else has tracked their sleep metrics alongside their outbreaks. It would be helpful to know if others find that specific types of rest, like REM vs. deep sleep, make a difference. I’m not entirely certain yet if this is the smoking gun, but the correlation in my own life is becoming hard to ignore.

I’ve noticed the same thing. If I pull an all-nighter or even just get less than 6 hours, I’m almost guaranteed a tingle the next day.

It’s definitely the stress on the nervous system. Sleep is when your body repairs everything. I started using a weighted blanket and my frequency dropped from once a month to maybe twice a year. Hard to say if it’s just the blanket or the better rest though.

There is actually some science behind this. Lack of sleep spikes cortisol levels, and high cortisol is a known trigger for viral reactivation. I’ve been tracking my sleep with a wearable for two years. Every single time my recovery score is low for three days straight, I get a minor flare-up. It’s not just about the hours you spend in bed, but the quality of that rest. I try to stop caffeine by noon now to help with the deep sleep cycles.

Sleep helps, but for me, it’s always been about hydration. I can sleep 10 hours but if I’m dehydrated, it doesn’t matter. Everyone’s body reacts differently to these triggers.

Magnesium glycinate before bed helped me stay asleep and I haven’t had a cold sore in months. Might be worth looking into if you struggle with staying asleep.

This is a great angle to look at. We always talk about lysine or antivirals, but rarely basic lifestyle hygiene. Thanks for sharing your observation!
