Undying beings from other worlds are hidden in our society. These cyborg-like entities possess powers far beyond our own. They are intrigued by the sensations of agony and mortality, which are impossible for them to feel in their home dimension. Over centuries, some have accumulated massive fortunes while observing humanity.

They present you with a proposition:

  • Let them observe you pass away up to five times.
  • After each instance, you are revived immediately. Your physical form is returned to a state of peak health, with any pre-existing ailments or disabilities fully healed during the process.
  • You earn $200 million for every death. You aren’t required to complete all five; the number of sessions is up to you.
  • If you finish the full set, you walk away with $1 billion.

The methods are set. You can pick from these options:

  1. Five bullets to the torso: You set the date, or let it be a surprise. It can happen in the privacy of your home. You might experience a brief period of bleeding out before the revival.
  2. Drowning: You are dropped from a chopper into the open sea on a day you select.
  3. Falling from a ten-story height: Choose the timing or let them catch you off guard. It results in a high-impact, bone-breaking landing.
  4. Interred alive: You are placed in a casket and buried. They retrieve and resurrect you once you have definitely suffocated.
  5. Struck by a bus: Occurs on a day of your choosing.

These events are strictly confidential and take place in secluded areas away from the public.

After completing your agreed-upon deaths, there is an optional service:

  • One year later, you can choose to delete the specific memories of the trauma.
  • You’ll still know the deal happened and how many times you died, but the visceral sensations of drowning, suffocating, or impact will be gone. All sensory data of the events will be wiped.

I’d go for just one round, hopefully passing quickly from the gunfire—perhaps while intoxicated—and then live out my days with $200 million.

As long as they are right there to ensure I’m revived, I’d pick options 1, 3, and 5. Those seem nearly instantaneous, and the shock would likely numb the pain. 2 and 4 involve too much psychological torture; I don’t think I could ever get over that kind of fear.

Why not, I’ll do all five. Knowing I’ll be fine afterward makes it a unique opportunity, though drowning and suffocation sound miserable.

Edit: Actually, thinking about it, $200 million is an astronomical amount of money. Why put myself through more? If I can pick just one, I’m going with the building jump.
