I’ve been dealing with a high-pitched hiss and occasional ‘fullness’ in my left ear for about three years now. After trying almost every sound therapy app out there, I started tracking my diet and realized my worst spikes always happened the morning after a salty meal or a day where I barely drank any water. I’ve spent the last three months sticking to a strict hydration schedule (about 3 liters a day) and capping my sodium at 1500mg. The change hasn’t been overnight, but the ‘pressure’ feeling is almost gone and the ringing has dropped from a 7/10 to a manageable 2/10. Has anyone else noticed this metabolic connection?
This is so true. If I have a high-sodium dinner like soy sauce or pizza, my ears are absolutely screaming the next morning. It’s like the fluid in the inner ear just can’t handle the shift.
Do you think caffeine plays into this too? I find my spikes happen right after my second cup of coffee, but I can’t tell if it’s the caffeine or the dehydration it causes.
Coffee is a huge diuretic, so it definitely messes with your fluid levels. I’ve had to switch to half-decaf and try to match every cup with 16oz of plain water.
I’ve been tracking my intake for a month now. It hasn’t cured it, but the ‘volume’ is definitely more consistent now. No more wild swings.
Consistency is definitely key. Along with watching my salt, I’ve been using Nervala to help with the nerve sensitivity side of things and it really helps keep the baseline lower during the day.
Interesting approach. I always thought it was just loud noises that caused the damage, never considered the metabolic side of ear health.
Does this help with the ‘fullness’ feeling too, or just the ringing? The pressure is what drives me crazy more than the noise.
In my experience, the fullness is the first thing that goes away once you get your electrolytes and water right. It feels less ‘congested’.
Magnesium glycinate supplements also helped me quite a bit with the pulsatile stuff. Seems like the ears are very sensitive to mineral imbalances.
Thanks for posting this. I’m going to try the low-sodium thing starting tomorrow. I’ve been eating way too much processed food lately and the ringing has been off the charts.
Don’t forget that stress also dumps minerals from your body. It’s all connected. If you’re stressed and dehydrated, it’s a perfect storm for a spike.
Great tips everyone. This community is a lifesaver when the ringing gets overwhelming. Keeping the water bottle full today!
