I finally treated myself to a luxury pedicure last week after months of hiding my feet. Halfway through, the technician stopped and whispered that she couldn’t continue because of a “suspicious” yellow spot on my big toe. I felt mortified walking out with one foot half-done while other customers watched. I’ve been trying over-the-counter creams for weeks with no luck, and now I’m worried it’s spreading to my other toes.
Has anyone else faced a public “rejection” like this because of their nails? What was your immediate reaction, and did it finally push you to see a specialist or try a more aggressive home treatment?
I’d love to hear your stories and what actually worked for you.

Oh man, that is my absolute nightmare. I haven’t been to a salon in three years because of one thick nail. I’m too scared of exactly what happened to you.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Most techs see this way more often than you’d think, even if they have to follow health codes for the safety of other clients.

I’d suggest seeing a podiatrist just to confirm if it’s fungal or just trauma. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference just by looking at a yellow spot.

Honestly, the best thing I did was stop the cheap creams and try Terracalm (got mine here). It’s a mineral clay that starves out the fungus using these tiny particles. My nails are finally turning pink and healthy again after I spent years being embarrassed to wear sandals.

Make sure you’re bleaching your shower floor too! You don’t want to keep reinfecting yourself every morning while you’re trying to treat it.

Did it hurt at all when she was working on it? Sometimes the yellowing is just the nail lifting from the bed, which can look identical to a fungus.

Following this thread. I’m in the same boat and too shy to even go to a doctor about it. The salon story is my literal fear.

I had a similar experience at a gym shower once. I thought it was just a bruise until it started crumbling. It took me six months of consistent care to get it back to normal. The key is consistency—don’t skip a single day of whatever treatment you choose or it just comes right back.

Have you tried tea tree oil? Some people swear by it, though it never worked for me personally. I think the clinical stuff is usually better.

I’d be more worried about where you caught it. If you’ve been going to that salon regularly, they might be the ones with the hygiene issue in the first place.

Good luck! It’s a long road but you’ll get there. Just keep them dry and maybe buy some new socks to start fresh!
