At 58, I felt like my stomach was constantly in a knot, regardless of how much fiber I ate. I’ve tried the usual probiotics and gallon-of-water-a-day routines, but they didn’t do much for the heavy feeling after meals. What finally made a difference for me was a combination of broad-spectrum digestive enzymes and stopping all food intake by 7:00 PM.
What I liked:
- The heavy feeling disappeared within three days.
- I started sleeping better because my stomach wasn’t working overtime.
What I didn’t like:
- Good enzymes are surprisingly expensive.
- It’s annoying to remember a pill right before you eat.
The surprise:
I didn’t realize how much my late-night snacking was sabotaging my morning digestion. The fasting window was the real shift for me.
Who it’s not for:
If you have a history of gastritis or ulcers, check with a doctor first, as some enzymes can be irritating. Also, if you’re a night owl who loves late dinners, this schedule is tough to maintain.

Which enzymes are you using? I’ve been looking at a few different brands but they all seem so different.
The 7 PM rule is the hardest part for me, but it really does work. My reflux almost disappeared once I stopped eating late.

I’m 62 and found that enzymes helped, but only the ones with lipase. I had to experiment for a while to find the right blend for my system.
Glad you found something that works. It’s such a relief when that heavy feeling finally goes away.
I’m a retired chef and I still struggle with the late eating. Our internal clocks really do change as we get older. I’ve noticed that if I eat a big meal at 8 PM now, I’m miserable the entire next morning. I might try the enzymes before my main lunch instead.
Do you take the enzymes with every single meal or just the big ones?

I usually just do it for dinner since that’s my biggest meal. Lunch is usually light enough that I don’t need them.

I’m 70 and I’ve been doing the ‘no food after 6 PM’ thing for a year. It’s the only thing that stopped my morning bloating. It takes discipline but it’s worth it.

Enzymes didn’t do much for me, unfortunately. I think my issues are more related to specific food sensitivities like dairy.
Did you experience any side effects when you first started the enzymes? I’ve heard they can cause a bit of cramping initially.
To the person asking about side effects: I had a little bit of gurgling for the first two days, but it settled down quickly. Just start with a lower dose.

The hardest part is social events! Everyone wants to eat at 8 PM.
Are you also avoiding caffeine? I found that cutting coffee after noon helped my stomach as much as the meal timing did.
I tried your 7 PM rule for the last four days after reading this. I actually woke up feeling hungry for once, instead of just full and gross. Thanks for the tip.
This is a great realistic summary. No ‘miracle cures,’ just practical habit changes and some supplement support. Thanks for sharing.
