I spent nearly five years dealing with what I call the lightning storm in my lower legs.
It started as a dull ache but turned into sharp, unpredictable jolts that would make me jump out of my chair. I tried just about everything the doctors suggested.
Gabapentin made me feel like I was walking through a thick fog all day, and the topical lidocaine creams I bought were basically just expensive lotion that lasted twenty minutes. I even tried high-dose B12 injections for a while, but the results were minimal at best.
About three months ago, I started taking a supplement called Nervala (i buy here - usually best price) after reading about the combination of alpha-lipoic acid and benfotiamine. I was skeptical because I’ve been burned by natural promises before.
The first two weeks were quiet, and I almost gave up. But by the end of the first month, I realized the frequency of the jolts had dropped significantly. It wasn’t just masking the pain; it felt like the nerves were actually calmer.
The 600mg of lipoic acid seems to be the sweet spot for me. Unlike the prescriptions, I don’t feel groggy or disconnected from my day. I can actually focus on my hobbies again without bracing for the next shock. It has been a steady, gradual improvement.
It isn’t a take one pill and you’re cured situation. You have to be consistent every single morning. I still have bad days if I overdo it, but they are much rarer now. If you’re struggling, it might be worth looking into this specific combination. Just make sure to check with your own doctor first.

The ‘lightning storm’ is the perfect way to describe it. It’s so hard to explain to people who haven’t felt it. Glad you found something that helps.
How did you decide on this specific combo versus just taking the standard alpha lipoic acid from the local health shop?
I’ve been using Nervala for about six weeks now and it has been a game changer for my night-time spasms too.
I switched from a generic brand to Nervala and the difference in my feet was noticeable within three weeks. The benfotiamine really makes a difference for absorption.
Does it cause any stomach upset? I have a sensitive stomach and most supplements tend to trigger my acid reflux.
I found that cutting out processed sugars also helped me quite a bit, though it wasn’t a total fix. It’s usually a combination of things that gets the best results. Glad you’re feeling better.
I decided on Nervala because I wanted that specific 600mg dose of lipoic acid paired with benfotiamine. I had tried some cheaper brands from the big box stores before, but they didn’t seem to have the same potency or the right blend. For me, the convenience of having it all in one capsule made it much easier to stay consistent.

Do you take it with food or on an empty stomach? I’ve heard conflicting things about ALA absorption.

The best part about Nervala for me is that it doesn’t cause that weird metallic taste some other supplements do. It’s been part of my routine for months.
I’m still doing physical therapy twice a week which helps with the mobility, but the nerve pain is the hardest part to manage. I might have to look into this because the gabapentin fog is getting to be too much for me lately.

How long did it take before you really felt like you could stop worrying about the jolts? Was it exactly a month?
It’s so wonderful to hear a success story. This condition can be so isolating when you can’t get around like you used to.
