Intense ear ringing finally stopped (muscular issue)

I’m in shock that I’m even posting this right now.

After a year of agonizing tinnitus, several mental health crises, and gaining 20 pounds just to cope, I finally found relief. After seeing multiple doctors and doing my own research, the ringing is gone. I still have a bit of white noise due to some moderate hearing loss, but the piercing sound is gone.

It turns out my severe tinnitus was caused by extreme neck muscle strain from poor posture over the last year. The sounds ranged from high-pitched screeching and whooshing to constant hissing. My first specialist told me that because of my hearing loss, there was nothing to be done and I just had to accept it.

I tried to live with it for six months before seeing a new specialist. He suggested my tinnitus might be linked to facial or neck muscle tension and recommended massages.

I also found a case study online (Chronic Cervicogenic Tinnitus Rapidly Resolved by Intermittent Use of Cervical Collar - PMC) about a man who had chronic tinnitus for 20 years. Doctors told him it was permanent, but it turned out to be neck-related. After wearing a neck brace for three weeks, his two-decade-long ringing vanished.

Inspired by this, I bought a $25 neck brace and started doing neck stretches every hour for a week.

I saw a massive difference within just an hour of wearing the brace. Combined with the stretches, the ringing dropped significantly. By the fourth day, the ringing was completely gone! I’m now on day nine and the silence is holding.

I’ve noticed that if I neglect the stretches, the strain returns along with the ringing, but it disappears once I resume the exercises.

Because of my hearing loss, there is still a very faint white noise, but it’s nothing compared to the misery of the last year.

The study I read mentioned that people with neck-related tinnitus often suffer for years because doctors overlook muscle strain as a cause. After a year of suffering and dark thoughts, I am finally free of the ringing. I’m so glad I didn’t just listen to the first doctor. I could have ended up like that man in the study, suffering for 20 years from something totally preventable.

It’s wonderful to hear you found relief. I suspect my tinnitus is also linked to neck strain since my hearing tests are perfect. I can change the sound by moving my head or jaw. Since I work from home, my posture is terrible, but I’m trying to fix it. This gives me hope to try a brace. I’ve had this for a year now, so please keep us updated!

That’s really intriguing. Could you explain more about how you use the collar? I looked on Amazon and saw some people even wear them to sleep.

Did you buy the inflatable type, a soft foam cushion, or one of the rigid plastic ones?

Congrats! I really appreciate you sharing your story.

This is fascinating because my chronic tinnitus started right alongside my neck issues. I definitely need to address my posture.

That’s fantastic news. Would you mind detailing the exercises? I’m at a desk all day and have a lot of neck and shoulder tension, so this might help me too.

Isn’t there a short-term treatment that involves electrical stimulation of neck nerves? It seems like there might be a connection.

Thank you for posting this. I’m pretty sure mine is neck-related as well, though I haven’t been consistent with yoga or massages. This gives me some fresh hope. I’m so happy you found a solution!

This is very encouraging. I know my issue is tied to TMJ, and that’s all about neck tension. I just bought this one: Amazon.com: Caldera International - Releaf® Neck Rest – Soft Neck Brace for Neck Pain and Support, Comfortable Neck Brace for Sleeping, Cervical Collar Neck Support Brace for Travel, Reading - Medium, Black : Home & Kitchen

I just ordered a similar brace after reading your post. I deal with chronic headaches and neck pain that’s always worst in the morning. After a decade, it’s only gotten worse. Like you, my ENT told me to just live with it. Thanks for sharing, and I hope this works for me too.

Man, I took a hard hit to the head a few years back and my neck hasn’t been the same since. My hearing is fine, but the tinnitus is brutal. Do you think this brace method would work for me?
