I’ve been documenting my journey for about four months now, and I’m at a bit of a crossroads regarding what is actually driving the improvement in my left big toe. For years, the standard advice has been to create an acidic environment using vinegar soaks or diluted lemon juice because fungus supposedly thrives in more alkaline conditions. However, after three months of strict vinegar soaks with only marginal success, I decided to flip the script and try a high-pH approach using specialized mineral soaks for the last five weeks.
The results have been confusing, to say the least. On one hand, the thick, yellowed keratin at the edge of the nail seems to be softening and sloughing off much more easily than it did with the acidic treatments. On the other hand, the skin around the nail bed looks slightly more irritated, which makes me wonder if I’m trading one problem for another. It’s hard to tell if the “clearing” I see is actual healing or just the physical removal of debris due to the softening effect of the alkaline solution.
I’m curious if anyone else has experimented with shifting the pH in the opposite direction of the traditional advice. There are a few angles to consider here. Is it possible that the fungus I’m dealing with is a specific strain that reacts differently to pH levels? Or is the benefit simply coming from the fact that I’m being more diligent with debridement now that the nail is softer? I’d be interested to know if people think the mineral content of the water matters more than the actual pH level itself.
To give more context, I work in a climate-controlled office, but I do go to the gym four times a week. I’ve been very careful about footwear, but I haven’t changed my diet or started any oral medications. If anyone has tried this, did you notice a “rebound” effect once you stopped? I’m trying to decide if I should stick with this for another month or if the redness in the surrounding skin is a sign that I’m damaging the skin barrier and potentially inviting a secondary bacterial infection. It would be helpful to know what your “clearance” signs looked like in the early stages—was it a gradual thinning of the nail, or did the whole thing just seem to detach?
