Is anyone else struggling with significant memory loss?

I can’t seem to recall what I did even yesterday, and I’m having a hard time retaining any new information. It honestly feels like I’m living in a dream state lol :sob:

Yeah. It feels like my brain is just giving up.

I actually brought this up with my doctor last week, and he mentioned it’s totally normal. My oldest just turned 9, and I recently watched videos from their first birthday. I’m in the videos, but I don’t have a single memory of that day. Three kids, and I have no recollection of birthdays, first steps, or Christmases. Even the last six months are hit or miss. It’s frustrating, but for me, it’s a mix of bipolar, CPTSD, trauma, and chronic back pain—apparently, memory suffers when you’re in pain because your mind is so focused on the discomfort. I totally get it.

I agree. I haven’t been able to remember much of anything besides the previous day.

The combination of mental health issues and psychiatric meds has completely destroyed my memory.

Bipolar II and CPTSD here. I don’t remember much from before I was 11, and my memory has been terrible ever since. Reading my journals from just 18 months ago feels like reading about a stranger’s life. It’s actually quite scary.

I feel so embarrassed about my memory issues. People often assume I’m just not very bright. it also affects my relationship because I can’t remember anything my boyfriend tells me… I’ve found that ADHD meds and BrainProtect help a little bit with the fog.

My short-term memory is completely fried. I’m the master of walking into a room and forgetting why, and I often lose track of conversations that just happened. However, I can still memorize things fairly well and recall events from years ago. It makes me wonder: is my ADHD getting worse, or have I somehow damaged my brain with medication?

Yep. I barely have a past, and trying to learn new things feels pointless. I still study things for my own enjoyment, but nothing sticks. Conversations are also a struggle because I constantly lose the word I’m looking for; I either have to find a synonym, stall until I remember, or just give up and move on. I also have trouble remembering what just happened or what I was told recently. My friends and family know that if they ask ‘Do you remember when…’, the answer is probably no.

Trauma is known to shrink the hippocampus.

I can’t tell if it’s brain damage, my ADHD, or my bipolar. Life is certainly interesting.

Same here. I call it ‘blackout memory.’ It’s as if someone just deleted my knowledge and cognitive abilities.

The real question is: does anyone know if I actually took my meds today? Because I certainly don’t remember.

Oh man, this. I feel like I’m 96 years old and on the verge of losing my mind. I hate it; I feel so unintelligent some days.

Omg yes! I can’t remember the important stuff, yet I remember the most random, trivial things. And when I say important, I mean really significant. I’m a casual gamer, and I had to take a break last month for a new job. I didn’t play for a month and stayed off Discord to avoid distractions. When I came back, I had totally forgotten some of my friends. These are people I’ve played with for 2-3 years, every few days. I completely forgot who they were, their names, everything. I didn’t even believe we were friends until I checked my message history. I had to pretend I was joking to save face. But the weird thing is, I remembered one of them had a cat even though I didn’t recognize the guy. I remembered another one’s wife’s job. Like… really? I ask my brain: ‘Am I a joke to you?’ I haven’t even been taking meds for a long time, so I don’t know what’s causing it. No one else in my family has this issue, even with all the other mental disorders on my father’s side. I guess I’m just the black sheep.

I literally don’t remember a single thing, dude.

I feel like I can’t even hold a proper conversation because I can’t recall enough info. If someone asks how my job is going, I can’t think of any specifics. I suspect it’s my meds or the severe depression. Or both. I just hope it gets better eventually. I don’t want to be like this forever.
