Tracking calories was never my strength, and I frequently struggled with overeating. You shouldn’t stress too much over strict calorie counting. Initially, I barely ate anything, which was a bit of an error, but it helped me distinguish between genuine hunger and eating out of boredom. These days, I only consume food when I’m truly hungry. If I feel hungry between meals, I’ll grab a piece of fruit like an orange or apple to tide me over until lunch or dinner. Also, don’t beat yourself up if you give in to a fast food craving occasionally. Sticking to 1500 calories for five days is far better than giving up entirely. Try to view food as fuel for your system; you don’t require a full tank for a short trip. Eventually, your body adapts and the process feels more instinctive. Just be patient, maintain a positive outlook, and the weight will gradually come off.
That’s a sound perspective—though for what it’s worth, many individuals find they need to be more disciplined as they approach their target weight. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m thrilled for anyone who can implement these changes, feel great, and see results. I’m certainly not trying to rain on your parade.
My biggest struggle is tracking calories, particularly during 12 to 13-hour work shifts. Eliminating sugar was my first step, which helped, but I’ve recently started preparing fruit smoothies. I’m not certain if this will be beneficial or counterproductive, but today I blended a 40-ounce drink with apples, bananas, grapes, watermelon, blackberries, and strawberries. It’s just an estimate, but I’m hoping that substituting snacks with a large smoothie will help manage my hunger and lower my overall calorie intake.
The key is discovering a method that fits your lifestyle, and it seems you’ve achieved that! Various factors can make ‘eating only when hungry and stopping when full’ quite difficult, such as neurodivergence, poor internal awareness of bodily signals, or picking foods where the calorie count doesn’t align with how full they make you feel (for instance, I can finish a whole box of pretzels before feeling satisfied). Even with high-protein options, like eating two hot dogs with all the fixings, I can easily consume over 1000 calories in a single sitting. Additionally, if someone has been overweight for a long period, their hunger signals might be tuned for a much larger physique.
