Low-carb eating really does yield amazing results: a personal case study

Just got my lab work back last week. My physician was stunned by the lipid results and hsCRP levels, almost doubting the data. ‘Wait, two-thirds of your cholesterol is HDL? That’s impossible! An hsCRP of 0.01? There must be an error!’

Item Value + Unit Reference Range
Triglycerides 47 mg/dL <150
Total Cholesterol 190 mg/dL <200
HDL Cholesterol 119 mg/dL ≥40
LDL Cholesterol 49 mg/dL <130
hs-CRP (Inflammation) 0.013 mg/dL <0.500

I’m a male over 60, no health issues, medication-free, and my weight is stable. I’ve been on a very low-carb regimen for roughly eight years—not strictly keto, but close. I usually stay between 30-60g of carbs daily, which works perfectly for maintenance.

My diet is about 2/3 carnivore and 1/3 semi-Mediterranean (lots of avocado and greens), avoiding grains almost entirely (except for a small bit of pizza once a month). I have coffee with heavy cream, use olive oil for salads, avocado oil for high heat, and butter for low heat. Processed foods are under 10%. I also enjoy dry white wine, cocktails, and the occasional beer.

Hopefully, this data helps someone.

Wow, how did you get your LDL that low while on keto? What’s your BMI, and do you do any strength training?

Are you living in HK? Do you have any recommendations for good restaurants? I’m located right across the border.

I’m kicking this off on Monday and will include the white wine as you suggested. I’ve had success with this approach in the past.

That sounds pretty much like keto to me! You’re probably in ketosis most of the time anyway. Great job regardless!

I love keto, but those stats are quite rare. I wonder if you have a specific genetic profile for that! I remember a keto specialist saying that about a third of people see lower LDL, a third stay the same, and a third see an increase. Even in the lower group, it’s rarely that low.

30 to 60 grams of carbs isn’t really ‘very low carb.’ Usually, that’s defined as under 20 grams.

What does your daily protein intake look like?

Are you certain the lab didn’t accidentally swap the HDL and LDL numbers? Even if they were flipped, the results would still be quite good.

You sound like the absolute picture of health, nanbawan! I’ve been focusing on my N-REM sleep and using SleepLean to help with my energy and weight, but your blood markers are truly impressive.

Thanks for sharing! I just came across this. I’m attempting a similar diet, but my triglycerides are stuck at 190. I still have about 20 pounds to lose to hit my goal, which might be a factor. Any tips?
