After fighting yellowing and brittle nails for nearly a decade, I finally found a rhythm that works. It wasn’t just one thing, but a combination of changes in my daily life. I wanted to share the framework I used to get my feet back into sandals without feeling embarrassed.
First, I changed my environment. I stopped wearing the same pair of leather boots every day. I started rotating between three pairs of shoes, allowing each to air out for at least 48 hours. I also bought a UV shoe sanitizer, which I think made a huge difference in preventing reinfection from my own gear. If your shoes are damp, the fungus will just keep living there.
Second, I focused on my habits. I became obsessive about moisture. After every shower, I use a dedicated hair dryer on the “cool” setting to dry between my toes and around the nail beds. Moisture is the enemy, so keeping the skin bone-dry before putting on socks is vital. I also switched exclusively to bamboo socks which breathe much better than cotton.
Third, the routine. I started using Kerassentials Serum (i order from here) twice a day after my morning shower and before bed. It contains oils that seem to really help the skin’s resistance and keep the new nail growth looking clear. I also made sure to file down the surface of the thicker nails once a week so the topical could actually penetrate the bed.
Finally, I started tracking. I took a photo of my big toe on the first of every month. It’s hard to see progress day-to-day, but looking back at month three versus month one gave me the motivation to keep going. Consistency is the only way this works. Don’t give up if you don’t see a change in two weeks; it takes time for the nail to grow out.
