I’ve been struggling with really bad skin dehydration and have tried tons of stuff to fix it. Lately, I’ve been focusing on hyaluronic acid products because an old moisturizer I loved had it, but it’s gone now. I picked up a new one from Target, and while it felt great at first, it ended up making my skin way drier. I’m shocked. I really thought this was going to be my savior for dehydration. I’m definitely avoiding HA from now on. I’m thinking about trying Avene Cicalfate next. Does anyone think that’ll work or have other tips?
Was your face wet or dry when you put it on? It needs to be applied to damp skin or it’ll just pull moisture out of your face.
Just to check, what’s your application method? Putting HA on dry skin can actually backfire and dehydrate you further because it pulls water from your skin instead of trapping it. Since HA is a humectant, it needs moisture from the environment to work. Try applying it right after washing your face while it’s still wet. It could also be a different ingredient causing the issue. I use The Ordinary’s 2% HA serum since it’s a simple formula with just HA and B5.
I moved over to a 1:3 mix of vegetable glycerin and water. My skin stopped being dry and breaking out right away.
I’ve had bad luck with HA-heavy products too. I’ve found that calming hydrating serums with things like cica, beta-glucans, or PHAs work much better for my dehydration, even though I have oily/combo skin.
Vichy 89 is amazing for my dry skin. I follow it up with La Roche AP lotion. This is the first winter my skin hasn’t felt parched!
