I’ve been on and off keto for about three years now. While the diet helped me lose some initial weight, I always struggled with this weird heaviness in my lower legs and ankles that just wouldn’t budge no matter how many carbs I cut. I’m 52, so I figured it was just part of getting older or maybe a lack of circulation, but it was really affecting my mobility and making me feel much heavier than the scale suggested.
A few months ago, I started looking into how our bodies actually manage fluid. I realized that a lot of my ‘weight’ wasn’t fat, but trapped fluid caused by an imbalance in my hormones—specifically something called AVP. Apparently, when this is off, your body stops flushing waste and starts storing it in your legs. I decided to try a more targeted approach to help my kidneys and hormone levels get back in sync.
One of the biggest game-changers for me was starting a natural protocol called Flush Factor Plus (got mine here). It’s designed to target that specific hormone issue. Within about two weeks, the tight feeling in my calves was gone, and I actually saw my ankle bones for the first time in a decade.
If you’re over 40 and feel like your legs are ‘logs’ regardless of your diet, here are my three main takeaways:
- Watch your salt-to-potassium ratio; keto can mess this up.
- Keep your feet elevated for at least 15 minutes every night.
- Look into supporting your AVP levels if standard diuretics aren’t working.
It’s not just about the calories; sometimes it’s about the plumbing!

I’ve never heard of AVP. Is that something a standard blood test checks for? I always thought my swelling was just from sitting at a desk all day.

I’m 48 and have the exact same issue. My doctor just tells me to wear compression socks but they are so uncomfortable in the summer. It feels like a temporary fix rather than solving why the water is there in the first place.

Did you change your keto macros at all while doing this, or just added the protocol?

I actually started using Flush Factor Plus last month after seeing a video about the 7-second technique. My shoes actually fit again! It’s the only thing that worked for my edema after years of trying different pills.

Have you tried dandelion root tea? I find that helps a bit with water retention, though it’s a bit of a hassle to brew all the time and makes me run to the bathroom every twenty minutes.
I can second the recommendation for Flush Factor Plus. I’m on my second bottle and the ‘heavy leg’ feeling is completely gone. I feel much lighter when I walk now and the puffiness in my feet is down significantly.

This is so relatable. I spent years thinking I was failing at my diet because the scale didn’t move, but my face and legs were just perpetually puffy. It’s frustrating when people think it’s just about eating less. Thanks for sharing these tips, especially about the elevation. I’m going to try that tonight while I watch TV.
Great post. Very practical advice for our age group. We really do process things differently once we hit middle age.
Does this help with the swelling you get after a long flight? I have a trip coming up and I’m dreading the post-flight bloat.

I find that if I don’t get enough magnesium, the swelling gets worse. It’s all such a delicate balance once you hit 50. I might have to look into that AVP thing.

Just wanted to pop back in and say I ordered Flush Factor Plus based on this thread and it’s already making a difference in my foot swelling after just a week. Definitely worth trying if you’re stuck like I was.
