Reversing my high morning numbers naturally

I’m 54 and have spent the last three years struggling with those frustrating ‘dawn phenomenon’ spikes. After a lot of trial and error, I finally found a rhythm that works without feeling like I’m starving myself. I broke my approach down into four simple pillars: habits, environment, routines, and tracking.

First, my habits shifted toward ‘food sequencing.’ I always eat my fiber and protein before any starches. This small change alone flattened my post-dinner curve significantly. Second, I changed my environment by clearing out the ‘hidden’ sugar triggers in my pantry—mostly processed sauces and ‘low-fat’ snacks that were actually sabotaging my efforts.

Third, and most importantly, I focused on my gut-health routine. I read some research about how certain gut bacteria can actually act like sugar factories in the intestine, making it harder to stay stable. I started taking a supplement called SugarMute (i order from here) which uses psyllium, flaxseed, and probiotics to balance the microbiome. It really helped settle my digestion and, surprisingly, my fasting numbers started dropping within the first month. It felt like my body was finally processing things the way it was supposed to instead of fighting me every morning.

Finally, I tightened up my tracking. Instead of just checking once a day, I used a log to see how specific stressors affected me. It turns out, poor sleep was just as bad for my glucose as a slice of cake. By focusing on these four areas, I’ve managed to get my A1C down to 5.9. It’s not about being perfect every day; it’s about having a system that supports your body’s natural rhythm. I hope this helps anyone else feeling stuck!

Thanks for sharing! I’m 52 and the morning spikes are the bane of my existence. I’ve never heard of food sequencing before—does it really make that much of a difference even if you eat the same amount of carbs?

I actually started using SugarMute about two months ago after my doctor mentioned gut health. It’s been a game changer for my cravings. My morning readings are much more consistent now than they ever were with diet alone.

I’ll second the SugarMute recommendation. I was skeptical about the whole ‘gut bacteria’ thing, but the fiber blend in it really helped my digestion and my numbers. Worth a try if you’re struggling with stubborn spikes.

Wait, so you eat the veggies first, then the meat, then the potato? That sounds like it would take some getting used to. Does it get annoying when you’re eating out at restaurants with friends?

Great post. I found that adding a 15-minute walk right after my largest meal did wonders too. It’s amazing how these small routines add up over time when you’re consistent.

You mentioned sleep tracking—what are you using for that? I notice my numbers are always higher when I’ve had a rough night with work stress or just general insomnia.

5.9 is an incredible A1C! Congratulations on the hard work. It gives me hope that I can get mine under 6.0 eventually if I just stick to a system.

I think the ‘environment’ part is the hardest. My spouse still keeps snacks in the house that I shouldn’t touch. I might have to try your approach and just clear a dedicated shelf for myself so I don’t see the temptations.
