Struggling with thick nails after years of wearing work boots

I’ve spent the last decade working long shifts in heavy, steel-toed boots. If you’ve ever been in that position, you know the environment inside those shoes isn’t exactly a spa. Lately, I noticed my big toe was looking thicker and slightly yellow, and the skin around it felt brittle. I’m curious if this is a common occupational hazard or if I’m just not being diligent enough with my footwear rotation.

There are a few ways to look at this. On one hand, it could be the lack of airflow. I’ve tried switching to moisture-wicking socks, which helped the dampness but didn’t really touch the nail issue. On the other hand, maybe I picked something up at the local gym. It’s hard to tell without knowing if others in similar jobs see the same pattern. I’ve been experimenting with a few topical options to see if I can improve the resistance of my skin to these flare-ups.

One thing that seemed to make a genuine difference for me was ProNail Complex (i order from here). It has a blend of oils and vitamins that actually feels like it’s repairing the skin rather than just drying it out. However, I’m still wondering if I should be looking into more aggressive shoe sterilization or maybe even a different material for my work gear. Has anyone else found a balance between keeping the boots on for 12 hours and keeping their feet healthy? I’d love to hear if you think it’s more about the environment inside the shoe or the topical treatments we use.

I definitely think the steel toes make it worse because they trap heat right at the tip. Have you tried a boot dryer? It makes a huge difference to start the day with bone-dry leather.

What kind of socks are you using? Cotton is the enemy for 12-hour shifts. You need merino wool even in the summer.

Same here, man. Been in construction 20 years. I started rotating two pairs of boots so each pair gets 24 hours to breathe. It’s expensive upfront but saves your feet in the long run.

Tea tree oil is usually the go-to, but it can be really harsh on the skin if you use it straight. Glad you found something that works for you.

How old are the boots? If they’re over a year old and you’re sweating in them daily, they might just be a lost cause for bacteria at this point.

I actually started using ProNail Complex a few months ago and the skin around my nails looks much healthier now. It really helps with that brittle feeling you mentioned.

If you’re going to the gym, wear flip flops in the shower! That’s almost certainly where the fungus is coming from if it’s not the boots.

Good luck! Foot issues are the worst to deal with when you’re on your feet all day.

I’ll second the mention of ProNail Complex because it’s the only thing that cleared up my yellowing nails after I spent a summer hiking in damp conditions.

I reckon it’s a bit of everything. Rotate the shoes, use the topical stuff, and maybe look into those UV shoe sanitizers if you want to be really aggressive about it.
