Why am I losing track of the golf ball?

I’ve been hitting the links every Saturday morning for nearly thirty years now. It’s my favorite way to stay active and catch up with the guys, but lately, I’ve run into a frustrating problem. I’ll tee off, feel a solid connection, and then… nothing. I completely lose the ball against the bright sky.

It’s not just the distance; even when it’s mid-flight, the contrast just isn’t there anymore. I find myself squinting and leaning on my friends to tell me where my own shot landed. It’s embarrassing to keep asking, “Did you see where that went?” especially when I used to be the one with the sharpest eyes in the group.

I went to my optometrist last month and they said my prescription is fine, but the “clarity” just isn’t what it used to be, particularly in bright morning light. Has anyone else dealt with this loss of tracking or contrast? What did you do to get your confidence back on the course?

I had a similar issue last summer. It turned out to be glare. Have you tried wearing high-quality polarized sunglasses? They really helped me pick the white of the ball out against the blue sky.

It might be worth getting a second opinion from a specialist. Sometimes standard eye exams miss subtle changes in contrast sensitivity that happen as we get into our 60s.

I went through this exact same thing about a year ago. I started taking iGenics because it has those AREDs-2 ingredients for eye health, and it’s actually helped quite a bit with my clarity during the day and even my night vision. My eyes just feel less strained now.

Look on the bright side, at least you are still hitting it far enough to lose it! I’m lucky if mine goes 100 yards these days.

Have you tried switching to the matte finish yellow or neon green balls? I switched last season because I couldn’t track white balls anymore and it made a massive difference for me.

I experienced this too. For me, it was the early stages of cataracts. It wasn’t that I couldn’t see, it was just like a film was over everything. Definitely check with your doctor again.

Does it happen when it is overcast too, or just on sunny days?

It’s definitely frustrating. I think we all hit that point where the eyes just don’t react as fast. Don’t let it discourage you from playing though. Use the neon balls and keep enjoying the walk!
