I’ll be the first to admit I thought the prescription lacquer my podiatrist pushed was a complete waste of money. After a decade of trying every natural oil and drugstore cream under the sun, I had zero faith in a tiny bottle of clear liquid. I expected it to work like a bleach—just soak in and kill everything on contact. When my nails still looked like crumbling yellow chalk after two months, I was ready to give up and just accept that I’d be wearing socks at the beach forever.
What surprised me was how much the mechanical side of the treatment mattered. I hated the filing part; it felt tedious and messy. But once I actually stuck to the routine of thinning the nail plate every Sunday before applying the meds, things shifted. The big caveat here is patience. This isn’t a breakthrough that happens overnight. It took nearly half a year to see that sliver of healthy growth at the cuticle. You have to treat it like a second job. If you’re looking for a quick fix, this isn’t it, but if you can commit to the grind, the results are actually real.

The filing is the worst part. I used to get dust everywhere until I started doing it over a damp paper towel. It really is about getting the thickness down so the medicine can actually reach the nail bed.

Which lacquer are you on? My insurance wouldn’t cover the name brands so I’m stuck with the generic Ciclopirox. Just started last week and hoping for the best.

I’m on month four of the generic stuff. I didn’t see anything for a long time either, but my podiatrist told me to take a photo every month. When I compared month 1 to month 4, the difference was actually visible. We just see our feet every day so we don’t notice the slow change.

Don’t forget to treat your shoes too! I spent a year doing the lacquer and it kept coming back because I was putting my clean feet back into fungal boots. Get a UV sanitizer or at least some antifungal spray for your footwear or you’re just spinning your wheels.

This gives me a bit of hope. I’m at the 3-month mark and was about to toss my bottle. I’ll keep at it.

I tried the lacquer for a full year and it did nothing for me. Ended up having to go on the oral meds. Watch your liver if you go that route, but it was the only thing that worked for my stubborn case. Glad the topical is working for you though!
Consistency is definitely the ‘secret’ ingredient everyone ignores.
