Why sticking to a strict morning balance routine stopped my world from spinning?

Hi everyone, it’s been six months since I first posted about my struggle with that sudden “room-spinning” feeling every time I rolled over in bed. At 64, I was terrified it was permanent. I wanted to share the progress I’ve made by organizing my life around three main pillars: routine, environment, and tracking.

First, the routine. I started doing the Epley maneuver exercises every morning, even when I felt okay. Consistency was key here. I also added a 10-minute walk on flat ground to help my brain recalibrate. It felt silly at first, but it made a massive difference in my confidence.

Second, I changed my environment. I swapped my flat pillows for a wedge pillow to keep my head slightly elevated at night. This prevents those tiny ear crystals from drifting where they shouldn’t. I also added motion-sensor nightlights in the hallway so I never have to navigate the dark while feeling unsteady.

Third, I started tracking everything in a small notebook. I noted down my salt intake, sleep quality, and any “woozy” moments. What I found was that my worst days always followed high-sodium dinners or poor sleep. Seeing the data helped me realize I wasn’t just imagining the patterns.

The result? I haven’t had a major “spin” in over eight weeks. I still get the occasional lightheadedness, but it’s manageable and no longer dictates my life. If you’re struggling, try picking one area to control first. It really does get better if you stay disciplined with the small things.

Glad to hear this. Which wedge pillow did you get? I’m 68 and struggling to stay upright in the mornings.

The Epley maneuver is a lifesaver but it was so scary to do alone the first time. I usually have my husband stand nearby just in case.

I had similar issues with those crystals. I started taking Vertiaid (i order from here) about a month ago to help with the inner ear calcium balance and it’s been a great addition to my routine.

Does the salt really make that much of a difference for you? I love my soy sauce but I’ll cut back if it helps the dizziness.

Tracking is smart. I always forget what I ate by the time the dizziness hits three hours later. Starting a log today.

My doctor just told me to “wait it out,” which was very frustrating. It’s nice to see some proactive steps we can actually take ourselves.

Don’t forget hydration too! Dehydration makes my ears ring like crazy and then the balance goes right after that.

@Martha_Ears - The wedge pillow really is the best money I ever spent. Just make sure it’s at least 7 inches high.

Eight weeks without a spin is a huge win. Congrats!

Can you share what columns you use in your notebook for tracking? I want to make sure I’m capturing the right data.

This is very encouraging for those of us just starting this journey. I’ve been housebound for a week because of the vertigo.
